Good morning, starshines. It is another beautiful day here on the base and it’s the start of a new week!

After the events of the day before and the meet and greet provided by four new Avatars, you may find yourself wondering how you can get in touch with them again. Fear not. One look at your handy dandy cell phone will reveal eight new contacts added to your directory. Feel free to shoot them a message. You may be surprised.

But before you get too far, perhaps it’s worth checking out the base once more. Those locked rooms from the days before have been unlocked, free for exploration. In addition, should occupants visit the central elevator they will find the elevator in working order (and flame-free) and that a new floor has opened. Take a look, familiarize yourself, and make yourself comfortable. Life on the base is a happy place.

And speaking of happiness…it’s funny. For the rest of the week, all who reside on the base will be inflicted with little feelings of hope and happiness, a belief that they can manifest almost anything. This week, all will discover that any mundane thing they hope for will be at their disposal...though do be careful. Those small wishes may come to fruition in ways you don't expect. For example, wishing for a year's supply of sushi may net you one astronomically large sushi roll. An eyeshadow palette may provide you with samples of actual colored eyelids. And a punching bag could be mistaken for a bag full of confetti instead.

This? Garreg Mach Monestary. Where I was based, before I came here.

A monastery...? Like, for monks?

[aubins]

It's a religious base, sure. But it was the base for a military academy. And then a strong hold of sorts, a few years down the line.

[alteracion]

So... was it a religious military?

[aubins]

Religion has the monopoly on power. Or... it did. And all the trappings that come with that, including housing and training the leaders and foot-soldiers of tomorrow in war.

Maybe a few of them will join your military force at the end of it so, win-win, right?

[alteracion]

Sure? [ dubious ] It kind of sounds like they don't have much of a choice otherwise?

[aubins]

Religion might have the power, but I don't think they'd have much luck telling the sons and daughters of nobility to join their army.

But for your regular folk, it's not the worst option out there.

[alteracion]

So... what are their other options, then?

[aubins]

Poverty?

I mean, you have the benefit of reading and battle experience, so you could always become a mercenary. Trader's another option, beneficial as you have the combat experience too... And then there's all the less savoury options. Criminal work, that sort of thing.

[alteracion]

So if you want a guaranteed good life, there's not really any choice.

[aubins]

Pretty much the same in most places, isn't it? You'll get the odd commoner who has a lucky break and makes it big on stage, or marries well, but most of the time you do what you can with what you can get.

[alteracion]

Doing whatever you can for survival isn't exactly the same as having to fight in a war, though.

[aubins]

And when the war's right in your own front yard?

[alteracion]

So you couldn't win a war with only volunteers?

[aubins]

If you could win a war without armies, you'd barely have a war at all. They'd last about a month and achieve even less than the ones we already have do.

[alteracion]

So what's this war for anyway?

[aubins]

What is war ever for? A wild idea, given radical form, and everyone else scrambles to protect themselves or fight back against that radical change, and everyone gets dragged along for the ride one way or another.

[alteracion]

So you don't like it, but you're still defending forcing people to participate?

[aubins]

They have other options. But they do what they feel is best -- military pays a steady wage. Sometimes that's enough.

[alteracion]

Didn't you say they start as kids, though?

[aubins]

Academy students are... what, 16? At their youngest. Couple of my classmates were older.

[alteracion]

I guess that's not as bad.

[ she's eighteen she can't say shit on 16 being too young ]

[aubins]

Helps if you can fight from an early age, sure. But academies are like the regular schools that nobles go to... in terms of age of admission. Regular academies have less swords, I would imagine.
