I don't think the appearance matters so much. Like... it looks like a furby, but that doesn't mean it is one. We know that it was abandoned and that it decided on its own it wanted to grow stronger. We just... don't know how it's doing that or when it started to want it, since the Avatar's group found it when it was still mostly AI, right?
